Navigating Never-Ending Niche Drama: Tips For Coaches & Service Providers

marketing mindset niche personaldevelopment strategy Apr 10, 2024

Niche drama is one of the most common hick-ups, new but also experienced coaches experience.

When working with clients who aren’t yet clear on their niche or feel the urge to pivot, they procrastinate on moving the needle in their business because they feel that without nailing their niche, they cannot take any other action in their marketing and talk to their ideal client.

The truth is that there is no perfect niche, only an evolving niche; it's crafted through your life experiences, strengths, values, and what makes you YOU.

No one can do YOU. Whatever topic you choose, you first want to make sure to make it “your own” so that you can own it like no one else. This is a delicate process that will be much easier if you have a coach by your side who helps you reflect on what you are too close to to see for yourself;

Your niche is nothing less than deciding on your ideal client combined with your most captivating, unique strengths and interests.

And tuning into that. Deeply. How you write copy, position yourself and your business, and how you want to sell your services.

Even after years in business, my ideal client changes over time. It adapts to how I evolve.

Why Your Niche is Like a Relationship

Think of your niche as a relationship. Initially, it's about exploration—getting to know each other, understanding depths, and seeing if there's a genuine connection. Over time, this relationship grows as you evolve together, overcome challenges, and celebrate your clients' wins.

Like any meaningful relationship, it requires patience, understanding, and the willingness to adapt. Niching down is nothing else than flirting with a certain message. It is like putting on a dress and seeing if it fits.

Signs That Your Niche is Evolving

How do you know when your niche is evolving? Perhaps you notice shifts in your client’s needs or discover new aspects of your expertise to which you feel drawn. Maybe you feel restless about what you're currently coaching or teaching or excited about new topics. Maybe you start reading books or take another certification that doesn’t fit your current field of expertise.

At least at first sight. Because really, more important, though, is HOW you do things. What makes you unique for your audience? Your entrepreneurial journey is as unique as your strengths.

The Beauty of Change and Transformation

Adapting to your new niche doesn't mean starting from scratch each time. It means listening closely to your strengths, life experiences, and the market's pulse. It involves staying true to your core values while being open to new opportunities for growth. Your best friends on this journey are continuous learning, flexibility, and integrating new concepts.

One of the first things I help my clients get crystal clear on is their zone of genius. From there, we take it a step further. Let’s say we start to „fit the dress“ rather than trying to get everything done at once. We dial into the message more. We dial into how you can create an offer that excites you. Maybe we look at how your old and new niches overlap (this may well be one of the most intimate phases in our work, as we often unlock something much more meaningful than the client may think at first).

Until you hit home.

For example, I am a business coach with a strong transformative approach to guiding and working with my clients on their goals. We often dive deep into their lives and their relationships with themselves while unlocking intense momentum in their business. While I've always been passionate about Positive Psychology and relationships, it took me some time to realize how these deeply influenced my work as a business coach.

I work with my clients on their businesses and themselves. I believe we can never separate ourselves from our businesses.

As soon as I dialed into this more in my message, I attracted clients who created big wins for themselves and their businesses. They “unlocked” their personal growth and their businesses. This is what I call building a business from the inside out. ✨

Becoming the go-to expert in your field of expertise can look different to any one of you.

Finding your voice and experiencing how it feels when you coach from your zone of genius instead of thinking how you SHOULD do everything will help you experience an immense burst of energy.

Strategies for Staying Aligned With Your Evolving Niche

  1. Reflect Regularly: Set aside time to reflect on your current niche and topics versus where you feel drawn. How do they overlap?
  2. Engage With Your Community: Feedback is invaluable. Genuinely engage with your audience to understand their changing needs. Talking to your clients instead of about your clients is the magic key to creating a deeper relationship with your audience.
  3. Educate Yourself Continuously: I am a big fan of learning and growing your knowledge as a coach. Staying on top of trends in your industry and areas of interest through courses, books, or networking is a must if you want to grow—personally and as the best coach for your clients.
  4. Experiment Fearlessly: Only some attempts will be successful, but each will bring invaluable insights. Only if you fail can you learn and move on. Hitting home, as I call it, may take time, but it doesn’t mean you won’t produce results or income if you manage to stay in the mindset of an entrepreneur.
  5. Work With A Coach Who Can See Your Brilliance: Your personal and business growth will be much easier (and faster) if you are not doing it alone. Having a coach by your side who is a good fit for what you are working toward is one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your business.
